Vietnamese Air Force To Acquire 12 Yak-130 Advanced Trainers From Russia

Last updated on February 22, 2020

Vedomosti news online announced that under a $350 million deal signed in 2019, Vietnam’s Air Force was to acquire 12 Yakovlev-130 advanced jet trainers from Russia.

If confirmed, the report would suggest that Vietnam may be initiating a major combat aircraft modernization program soon. The 2-seater Yak-130 which can operate as a light ground attack aircraft has proven well suited for advanced jet pilot conversion training as it can be programmed to mimic the flight handling characteristics of Russian fighter aircraft such as the Sukhoi-30 and even the modern stealthy Su-57.

Vietnam already operates 35 modern Sukhoi Su-30MK2V as well as 11 older Sukhoi Su-27.
