Algerian Air Force Lockheed C-130H-30 Registered 7T-WHM That Crashed February 11th 2014 Killing 77 On Board With 1 Survivor

A Lockheed C-130H-30 belonging to the Algerian Air Force and registered 7T-WHM crashed Tuesday, February 11th 2014 shortly after 11 am (5 am est) while ferrying administrative and military personnel along with their families from Tamanrasset province to the eastern city of Constantine. Of the 77 people on board among which 4 crew members, a lone survivor had been found; a soldier having sustained head injuries.  The plane which crashed and exploded in mountainous terrain near the town of Ain Kercha located 30 miles south east of its destination Constantine had encountered severe weather. The tragedy has generated the highest toll of all of the three Algerian Air Force C-130 aircraft having sustained crashes in recent history, prompting a 3-days nationwide mourning period being issued by the government.

The previous crashes of C-130 aircraft belonging to the Algerian Air Force took place allegedly on February 23rd 2009 and June 30th 2003 involving 7T-WHQ crashing in the outskirts of Blida, Algeria killing all 5 on board along with 10 on the ground. In the meantime two of the civilian variants of the C-130; the L-100 (-30) flying for the national carrier Air Algerie did crash on August 1st 1989 (7T-VHK) at Tamanrasset, Algeria followed by 7T-BHG on August 13th 2006 at Piacenza, Italy killing all 3 crew on board.

At least one other Algeria Air Force C-130H aircraft is known to have crashed in 2009 although few details have ever been disclosed about that accident.
